Should Technology Skills Be A Subject Taught In All Schools? (4 Minute Read)
Hello Everyone,
Where are you reading this essay now? Chances are that you are reading this from a device like a phone or a computer. Where did you learn to use that device? Chances are that you learned to use it by teaching yourself. Well, what if I told you that there are classes all about how to use a phone, keyboard shortcuts on a computer and so much more about technology? This is a class that is being taught in countless schools around the world. That is right, schools around the world are teaching electronic skills. Today I will be showing you exactly why this subject should be taught in every school around the world.
Screens are all around us. Whether it is a television screen that you watch the morning news on or even the computer that you do your work on screens are all around us. These screens have many secrets that we could use to help us use them more efficiently. One well-known example of this is keyboard shortcuts for things like pasting or copying. There are many other shortcuts and statistics have shown that 90% of people do not know the ctrl+f shortcut to search a web page. This is an extremely useful shortcut and it could make work easier for so many people around the world. If children were taught this shortcut in school imagine how much easier they could do their jobs and accomplish work leading to them being able to explore hobbies like science. That could lead to many discoveries so in that way such small teachings could make a giant difference. One may argue that there are only a few teachings like this and that after a few months then the teacher would not be able to teach anymore. Truly though there are over a thousand simple tricks to help work get over faster. Also after simply hearing the shortcut once the student does not completely register it. This means that the teacher will have to let them try each shortcut again and again.
Technology is truly a new science. Technology has helped pull off many amazing feats like landing on the moon and so many other notable things. One example of something that technology has created is as simple as your bedside clock. Imagine if you could invent something like that. You could invent endless things that could help other people just like you in their day to day lives. You could be an inventor who invents things that we use in our everyday lives. This is all possible with the help of technology skills taught in school. Another thing that is taught in technology skills classes is coding. Coding is the building block for everything that we use like our bedside clock. Coding is a simple way to program a robot or machine to do a certain task. These tasks can be simple like waking you up in the morning. They can also be complicated like guiding a rocket into space. If you knew to program then you could make those inventions that I was talking about earlier. You could do difficult things that people who did not know coding could only dream of doing. You could even do those things with ease and make things like games and apps. Someone may say that coding is quite hard to learn and it requires a lot of skills and dedication. Really though if you are taught coding as an equal subject to maths and science for even just two years in school then you could be a master of coding. This common stereotype comes from the fact that if you study coding as an adult or as a parttime hobby then it is hard to learn.
Many people say that all schools can’t have a lab full of computers and multiple computers. This is true but it does not have much to do with the problem that is being debated now. First, all government schools can get funding from the government to purchase a few desktops and if possible a full lab. Even schools in small villages can use a local computer that everyone in the town shares a single or a few computers. This is a vision that would require some effort on the part of the government but it is worth it if we can enhance our civilization’s technology and efficiency in day to day lifestyle. Even some schools that can easily afford a computer lab like private schools in America do not have this class. This is mainly because they think that it is unnecessary to have this class. After all, most of their children are not going to become computer specialists. This is wrong though because this class is needed for more people than just computer specialists.
All schools should have technology skills as a subject for their students. This is because screens are all around us and we need these shortcuts to do work quickly. This will also help make new inventions to help us advance as a society. After this, I hope that you are convinced about this matter. I also ask you to do something, tell a school in the district or send a letter to your mayor that says that you want the schools in your town to have Technology Skills as a subject for the students. And if you are not convinced then ask yourself this question. Would you like to have a world like it is today with the same inventions and work taking forever to get done? Or would you like to have a world where we were advanced as a civilization and we had great inventions that aided us in our everyday life? If you chose the second one which I am pretty sure that you did then you want the world where my idea is put into place.

Excellent post, Chaitanya. Very thought provoking. I agree that we should spend more time learning how to engage with technology, formally.
