Should A Second Language Be Compulsory At Schools? (3 Minute Read)

Hello everyone,

Today I will be discussing whether we should remove a subject from school. This subject is a second language, it will still be available to students who wish to pursue it. I will now be taking you on a tour of all of the reasons why we should partially remove a second language as a compulsory subject.

First, many children struggle with learning another language. They can be deactivated because they are not as good as the rest of the class at learning a new language. Imagine if the child could remove all of that stress on their shoulders and excel in the other subjects where they do well. This could seriously help us all as students who choose to enhance their science skills instead of taking a second language could help to advance the field of science instead of learning a language that they may never even use in their life. Another thing that can be benefited from this idea is that we could have stress free children. Parents could now spend more time with their children and have a child who they find nicer to talk to simply because the child has no stress from learning a second language. The child could also make more friends. After all, they appear more friendly because they have had no worries. These are the many benefits of making a second language class a choice class for the child. Someone may say that almost all students would choose to not take a second language. Really, many children love the second language and want to learn it very well. The parents would also have a say in whether or not the child can skip this class or not.

Many children never will use a second language for the rest of their lives. My idea is that children should have to go to a second language class until they are 10 or 11. After that, their parents will meet with them and discuss whether or not the child should continue to take a second language class. One of the factors that decide this will be stress from the subject. Some other factors include whether the child will travel and many others. The child will then come back to school. If they have chosen to continue a second language, then they will go to that class. If they have chosen to opt-out, then they will go to a study hall of them and their parent's choice to enhance their progress in the class that was chosen. This is a great idea because as I said before, it can lead to more discoveries in the field of the subject they chose to pursue in study hall. Someone may say that the teachers who teach science and maths will probably not be free to teach children in the study hall. This is quite untrue because the teacher could simply pre-record a video explaining the day's topic. There could also be a volunteer in case the children have any questions. This volunteer could be a student's parent.

I hope that you now see that we should not make a second language compulsory to all. This is because students will have tress taken off their backs. This will help them to make more friends. Also, any students will not use the language that they learned so they can hone their skills in another subject. This could mean more discoveries in that field of science or any other subject that they honed their skills in. In case you are not convinced think about t and make this decision. Would you like a world where people who have never been to foreign countries and may never anyway know random languages? Or would you instead like a world where people who need another language have it and there are many discoveries in all the fields in the world.

  1. I think that a second language is helpful, especially when you are traveling. I also believe that learning a second language re-wires your brain in a way that makes you more creative. I do understand your points about the associated stress though. Best of luck with French!

    1. I am saying that people who think will travel will take second language. I think it is useless for people who will never need Spanish to learn it. If you think you will use it then you can definitely keep studying a second language.

  2. I think learning a second language is a good thing... More so in a country like ours, our native languages will cease to be prominent if we do away with a second language :)

    1. If you believe that then you can learn a second language. That is the whole reason for this idea. Those who decide to can and those who decide against do not need to go. :).

  3. I agree with you. Second language should be optional. Whilst I agree with the first comment that learning a language re-wires the brain there are other things such as learning an instrument that can help re-wire the brain too.
